Our Planetarium's New Projector: The Digitarium Mu 2
In 2026, Glendale Jr/Sr High School's planetarium entered a new era with the installation of the Digitarium Mu 2, a digital planetarium system by Digitalis Education Solutions. This new system replaced the school's original 1969 Nova III star projector.
The Mu 2 uses a native 4K UHD projector paired with Digitalis's proprietary fisheye lens, casting sharp, high-contrast imagery across the entire dome with no blind spots or gaps in coverage. Unlike the old analog Nova III, which mechanically projected a fixed set of roughly 650 stars, the Mu 2 is a fully digital system capable of rendering the night sky, solar system, and beyond with far greater accuracy, flexibility, and detail. It also brings along the ability to display custom content on any subject.
Illumination comes from a laser-phosphor light source rated for an expected 30,000 hours of use, meaning there are no bulbs to replace and years of reliable operation ahead. Combined with an intuitive, computer-free control interface, the new system makes it easy for teachers to bring immersive astronomy lessons back to the classroom without specialized training.
This upgrade ensures Glendale's planetarium remains a vibrant part of science education for decades to come.
